What Is Golf Fitness?
When we say we want to be fit, we need to ask the question - fit for what? Fitness requirements for each sport are a matter of being 'fit for purpose'. A long distance runner obviously needs a different kind of fitness compared to a tennis player or a golfer.
You're probably already familiar with the 3s', that is, strength, stamina and suppleness as attributes that determine your level of fitness. As a golfer you'll need these to varying degrees and if you're lacking in one, your game will suffer. I would like to add two more.
The first is synchronisation (coordination as we know it but it doesn't begin with S). You may have the strength but if your muscles are not firing at the right time, their strength will work against you. You'll require more effort to work against the muscles firing at the wrong time which not only prevents free-flowing action but also increases your chances of injury.
The other is judgement (yes okay this one doesn't begin with S!). Your 4s' aren't worth much if you cannot make the right decision at the right time. This may be during the course of a game or about when you practise and what sort of practise you do. Judgement comes with experience and practise. Being able to stand back and observed what just happened in a detached state will help you learn more and more from the game every time you play. So whilst you need to work on your strength, suppleness and stamina for your golf, don't forget to consider synchronisation (coordination) and your skills of observation for judgement. However, coordination is not something you can improve by working harder, quite the opposite in fact. Your golfing techniques will improve once you learn to reduce the amount of effort you apply (the right kind of strength) to allow your body's innate reflexes to determine which muscles contract and which need to relax. This isn't something you can second guess because it's a complex task. The techniques I designed for my Golf Sense program will help you recognise unnecessary actions I see many golfers make that are detrimental to coordination. For more information please click here.
