Want to play better golf? Of course you do! But are you getting the most from your practise, playing and coaching?

Is this you? Do you stand at the tee struggling to remember twenty different things you think you're supposed to do? You probably have a shelf full of excellent books on technique, golf fitness and how to improve your mental game, but do you have the ability to follow all this advice and put it into practice? Are you able to follow to the letter the instructions from your books and coach? Or do you feel something gets lost in translation.

Your ability to play good golf is not just about your golfing skills. Like all sports you need good hand-eye coordination, balance, strength, suppleness, stamina and mental fitness.

But there is one more skill vital for your performance. One that is fundamental to all the others that can make the difference between a good golfer and an excellent one. It's a skill that few players consider and therefore neglect. It can also make golf seem so much easier and simple.

So what is it? It doesn't sound much, or even that exciting, but it's immensely powerful skill; it's an ability to 'be in the moment'. When you're in the moment you're totally focused and in feel in control.
When you're out of it, nothing seems to work and you find yourself making those silly, frustrating mistakes that you know you shouldn't. You try to do too much at once and nothing works.

But the main advantage of being in the moment is that it opens the way to The Zone - the step up, a sublime state where suddenly life and sport don't seem quite so complicated. You may have experience of being in The Zone before, but probably rarely and for only a few fleeting moments. Most of us get into it almost by accident and hence don't know how to get back there again.

For a golfer, playing in The Zone has many benefits beyond just lowering your handicap and winning trophies. It will help you get so much more from this wonderful game by taking you to a level you never thought you'd reach.

If you've ever had one of those days when everything you do seems to work, it was easy, fun and simple - then you were in 'The Zone'. Players and athletes from all sports speak of such moments but unfortunately as soon as they acknowledge they're in The Zone they often find they drop back out of it.

Many sports people and golfers I've interviewed get frustrated by erratic performance. One moment they're in The Zone and playing like a dream, and the next it's all gone pear-shaped. The trick is to know how to get yourself into the right state of mind to open the door to The Zone.
